Can You Use Chopsticks?

　私が日本で一番聞かれた質問は「どこから来たの？」じゃあなかったわ。　「あなたお箸は使える？」だったの。

　ほとんどいっつも私がレストランへ行くと、誰かがその質問を私にしたわ　– 私の日本人の友達、新しく知り合った人たち、そしてウェイトレス。　私が楽しい食事ができるようにっていう彼らの気持ちはとってもうれしかったわ。　でもしばらく日本で過ごしているうちに、私はそれにうんざりするのをやめなきゃって思ったの。　そうよ！　もちろん私はお箸を使えるわ。

　ある時、誰もその質問を私にしなかったことがあるの！　私たちは席について注文をして、その間一度もお箸についての会話はなかったの。　ウェイトレスは私たちの食事を出してくれて、私は自分のお箸を持っていざ食べようとしたの。

　ウェイトレスはびっくりしたように私を見たわ。　そして私自身も何が起こったのかわからないうちに、彼女は私の手からお箸を取ってキッチンへ走り去っていったの。

あれれ？　いったいどうなってるの・・・？

　しばらくして彼女はフォークを持って戻ってきたわ、頭を下げながら何度も何度も「すみません」って言いながら。

　ああ、私は外人もだいじょうぶだってことを示すのに時間がかかりそうって思ったわ・・・。

The question I heard the most in Japan was not “Where are you from?” 　No, actually it was “Can you use chopsticks?”

Almost every time I went to a restaurant, someone was likely to ask me that question – my Japanese friends, a new acquaintance, or even the waitress. I appreciated their concern that I would have a nice meal.

But after I had been in Japan for awhile,I really had to stop myself from rolling my eyes.

Yes! Of course I can use chopsticks.

One time,though, nobody asked me the question! We had sat down and ordered our food and never once did the conversation turn to chopsticks. The waitress started serving our meals and I picked up my chopsticks, ready to eat.

The waitress glanced at me in panic,and before I knew it she had pulled the chopsticks out of my hands and was running back to the kitchen.　

Huh? 　What in the world…?　
A minute later,she came back with a fork, nodding her head and saying “sumimasen” over and over again.

Oh no. I guess it really takes a lot for gaijin to prove themselves…
