peanuts, cracker jack… and octopus

　私が初めて日本を訪ねたとき、それはアメリカの野球シーズンの途中だったの。　私の大好きなカブスはもしかしたらプレーオフへ進める大事な時　– でも私は見逃すかも知れない！　もちろん、ゲームの内容をインターネットでは読めるわ、でもそれは決して同じじゃないの。

　私のお父さんは気持ちをなだめようとしたわ。　そして私に日本の野球をみることを勧めたの。　もしかしたら、それは人生たった一度のチャンスかも知れないよって。

　数日後に東京へ着いた時に、私はヤクルト・スワローズのスケジュールを手に入れたの。そのチームは私のユースホテル近くの神宮球場で試合をしていたわ。　私は興味のある友達と一緒に行くことにしたの！

　私たちが試合に着いた時、私たちはとってもおなかがすいていたの。　ベースボールにつきものの食事にしましょうよ！　私が想像してたのは、ホットドッグやピーナッツ、クラッカー・ジャック。。。

　私たちが場内売店に近づいたとき、私は人々が紙に包まれた小さなボールにつまようじが付いたものを持って歩いていくのに気が付いたの。それは私には不思議な食べ物に見えたわ。私は思い切って一人の観客にそれが何か聞いてみたわ。

　「たこ」。　私はタコ？って思ったわ。　でも、それは全然見慣れたメキシカン・フードには見えなかったわ。　だから私は辞書で調べたの。　「たこ」。　それはたこの小さな断片を包んで揚げたものだったわ。

これって、自分が想像してたベースベールの食べ物じゃあないわ！

When I first went to Japan, it was the middle of the American baseball season. My beloved Cubs actually had a chance to make the playoffs – but I would miss it! Sure, I could read about the games on the Internet, but it just wasn’t the same.

My dad tried to make me feel better and encouraged me to check out Japanese baseball. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, he said.

So a few days after I arrived in Tokyo, I found the schedule for the Yakult Swallows, the team playing at Jingu Stadium, nearby my youth hostel. I got a group of friends together and we were off!

By the time we arrived at the game, we were starved. How about some baseball food! I thought about hot dogs, peanuts, cracker jack…

As we neared the concession stand, I noticed people walking in out direction with paper containers filled with little balls stuck with toothpicks. This food was unrecognizable to me. I boldly approached one of the fans and asked them what it was.

Tako. I thought, taco? No, it looks nothing like the familiar Mexican food.

So I checked my dictionary.

Octopus.

It was pieces of octopus covered with deep fried batter.

Not exactly what I expected to eat at a baseball game!
