お好み焼きおばちゃん

　倉敷は岡山の近くの小さな町。 でもその規模のわりには、たくさんの興味深い見所があって人気のある観光地だったわ。　アメリカ人の友達と私は午後のほとんどを、歴史地区の水路のあたりをぶらぶらして過ごしたの。　よく保存された伝統的なお店をいろいろのぞいたり、大原美術館を楽しんだりしたわ。

　そういうわけで私たちはちょっとお腹が空いてきたの。　私たちはこんな伝統的な日本の町を訪ねているのだから、本当の日本食を食べるべきよねって決めたの。　でもたくさんの観光客がいるだけあって、レストランは何処もとても高かったわ。　だから私たちは地元の人たちが食べに行くような所を探したの。　だって彼らは観光客向けの高い食事をとらないでしょ。

　私たちは観光客向けの通りからちょっと離れて、小さいけどお昼ごはんを食べれるところを見つけたわ。　お店に入ってすぐ、私たちはおばあさんが鉄板の向こうにいるのに気が付いたわ – そして彼女の目は私たちを見て、大きく大きくなっていったの。　たぶん多くの外人たちは、観光地からそんなに離れたところまでこないんじゃないのかな。 　彼女は私たちをみて本当に驚いていたわ。

　でも彼女の驚きはすぐに消えておいしいお好み焼きを私たちに作ってくれたの– それは私たちが倉敷の歴史地区で見つけれるどんなところよりも安かったわ。

Kurashiki is a small town near Okayama. Despite its size, there are a lot of interesting attractions and it is a popular tourist destination. My American friend and I spent a whole afternoon wandering around the historic canal area, ducking into well-preserved traditional storehouses, and browsing through the Ohara Museum of Art.

But then we got hungry.

We decided that because we were visiting such a traditional Japanese town, we should eat real Japanese food. But with so many tourists around, the restaurants were all super expensive.

So we set off to find where the local people eat. Surely they didn’t pay the high tourist prices for a meal.

We explored streets far off the beaten path and finally settled on a little lunch counter. As we entered the shop, we noticed the grandmotherly woman behind the grill – and her eyes were growing larger and larger at the sight of the two of us.

I guess not many gaijin ventured so far from the tourist district. She definitely looked surprised to see us.

But she got over her shock pretty quickly and prepared delicious okonomiyaki for us – for much cheaper than we could have ever found in the historic district of Kurashiki.
