Rise of the Flaming Sun

flaming sun comes up & steps on my toe

　そう、そんな感じで私の日本での生活は始まったのです・・・。

　すっごい驚きで毎日が冒険みたい、周りの全てを理解しようとがんばらなくっちゃならない。何をするにも思い切って飛び込んでみちゃえって感じで。　でも、後になってみるといつも「やればできるじゃん！」。　日本での生活も案外イケルかもしれない、たとえ時々はものすごく大変だって思えることがあったって。

　私が始めて「ランド・オブ・ザ・ライジング・サン（日本）」を訪れたのは、大学の海外派遣プログラムを通してでした。　その当時、たった一つだけ知っていた日本語は「オハイヨ」。　なぜなら子供の時にセサミストリートを観て知っていたから。　でも、実際にはそれはあまり役には立ちませんでした。　そういうわけで、私たちクラスメートはとっても大変だった4週間を東京、京都、大阪で過ごしたのです。　でもその旅を通してとっても大事なことに気が付いたの、「私は日本が大好き！」

　だから私は大学を卒業した後でまた日本へ戻ってきたの、徳島で働くために。　徳島ってすっごい田舎でしょう？　そう、でもそれは私にとって最高の場所でした。　ちっちゃいけど、何もわかっていないアメリカ人に親切な人達と出会うのにはぴったりの。　

　私はその仕事の1年間の契約期間が過ぎた頃には、もう日本のことが忘れられなくなっていました。　そういうわけで私はその後に5回も日本へ渡り、とうとう日本人男性と結婚まですることに・・・。　今はアメリカに戻っていますが、いまでも日本での生活が忘れられません。今の自分は、日本でのいろんな経験抜きにはありえないのだから。

And so goes my life in Japan.

What a trip. Everyday was an adventure, a challenge to grasp the world surrounding me. All I could do was dive in and hope to stay afloat.

But as time went on, I realized I could do this! I could go with the flow that is Japanese life, even when the current started to get rough.

The first time I visited the "Land of the Rising Sun" was as a college student on a foreign study program. The only Japanese I knew was "ohaiyo," which I had learned from watching "Sesame Street" as a kid. That wouldn't get me very far. But somehow, my classmates an I managed to survive four grueling weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

And I came to realize something important: I loved Japan!

So I came again after graduation, this time to work in Tokushima. I know. Tokushima. So country, right? Yeah, but it was the perfect place for me, small enough that I could connect with people willing to help a clueless American.

Even when I finished my one-year contract, I couldn't stay away from Japan. I've been back five times, even married a Japanese guy.

And I may be back in the US now, but I can't forget my Japanese life. It made me who I am today.
