Singing Like Stars
私の同僚はもうすぐ徳島を離れることになったの。 一年以上を徳島で過ごして、アメリカへ帰る時がきたの。 彼の出発に際して一つ確かなことがあったわ・・・。
そう私たちはグッドバイ・パーティをやるってこと！
事務所の人たち全員と何人かの生徒たちは一緒に夕食へ行ったわ。 でもパーティはそこで終わらなかったの。 私たちは次の場所へ移ったわ・・・。
カラオケ！
私はいつもどれくらい日本人がカラオケが好きか聞かされてたわ。 でも私は日本で一度もカラオケボックスへ行ったことがなかったの。 だから私は何が起こるのかまったくわからなかったわ・・・。
ウェイトレスは私たちを個室へ案内したわ。 そこは私たちが誰にも邪魔されずに思う存分に歌える場所だったわ。 そしてみんなすごく盛り上がったの!
いつもおじさんはビートルズやカーペンターズを大声で歌ったわ。 若い女性は明るくて楽しい声でモーニング娘やスマップを歌ったの。 私はただ座っているうちに信じられなくなってきたわ。
カラオケはみんなの別の面を引き出したの！
My co-worker in Tokushima would be leaving Japan soon. After spending over a year in Japan, it was time to go back to the US. His departure meant one thing for sure…
We would have a good-bye party!
The whole office staff and some of our students went out for a nice dinner. But the party didn’t end there. We would go on to a second place…
Karaoke!
I had always heard how much Japanese people love karaoke, but I had never been to a “karaoke box” in Japan. So I had no idea what I was in for…
The hostess led our party into a private room, where we could sing to our hearts’ content without strangers listening in. And people really got into it!
Usually reserved older men singing The Beatles and The Carpenters at the top of their lungs. Younger women belting out peppy pop songs by Morning Musume and SMAP. I just sat back and stared in disbelief.
Karaoke sure does bring out another side of people!
