Udon Chef

　日本でのひとり暮らしは、私の場合簡単なアメリカンフードを家で料理してたの　–　オムレツ、ハンバーグ、サンドウィッチ。　お米の他には、私は日本食を料理したことがなかったの。

　でもある日、私はうどんを作る機会があったの　–　手打ちで！

　私の友だちは私と何人かのアメリカ人の女の子を彼の故郷がある香川県へ、うどん屋さんを開いているお父さんに会わせるために連れて行ってくれたの。　私たちはうどんをお昼ごはんに食べることは知っていたわ。　でもうどんを私たちが作るということは知らなかったの！

　彼は小麦粉を水と混ぜることから練ったものを木の棒で伸ばすことまで、全ての方法を教えてくれたわ。　私たちは練ったものをビニール袋に入れてその上を歩いたりもしたわ！

　それは長くて大変な作業だったわ。　でもその間に私たちはお昼ごはんを待ち遠しくなってたの・・・。

　それは私が食べたなかで一番のうどんだったわ　–　だって自分で作ったんだから!

Living by myself in Japan, I usually just cooked simple American food at home – omelets, burgers, sandwiches. Other than rice, I never tried to cook Japanese food on my own.

But one day, I had the chance to make udon – from scratch!

My Japanese friend took me and some other American girls back to his hometown in Kagawa Prefecture to meet his father, who now runs an udon shop. We knew we would eat udon for lunch.

But we didn’t know we would make the udon by ourselves!

He guided us through all the steps, from mixing flour with water to rolling out the dough with heavy wooden pins. We even had to put the dough in plastic bags and walk on it!

It was a long, hard process. But by the time we were ready to eat lunch, I knew…

This would be the best-tasting udon I had ever had – because I really had to work for it!
