A Uniform Look
公立学校でもジーンズとＴシャツを毎日着ていくような所からやって来た私は、子供たちがみんな学校の制服を着ているのにとってもびっくりしたわ。 男の子たちは白いシャツにネクタイ、女の子たちはプリーツのスカートにブラウス。
最初は全ての制服は私には同じように見えたわ。 でも数ヶ月を徳島で過ごしてみると、私は子供たちが学校へ着て行く服にあるちょっとした違いに気が付いてきたの。 それぞれの学校は自分たちの制服を持っていたわ。 それは学校の性格を示していたの。 – そして日本には明らかに差別化された高校があったわ。
地元の有名私立高校に通う子は几帳面に着飾っていたわ – パリッとした白いシャツをいつも着て、白いバッグ、靴、ソックスまで揃っていたわ。 でもちょっと競争率の低い学校へ通う子たちは大きいズボン、短いスカート、そしてカッコイイ靴やソックスを着ていたわ。
制服はそんな彼らが通う学校のことをたくさん示していたわ！
Coming from a public school where I wore jeans and a T-shirt to class everyday, I was surprised to see all the kids in Japan wearing school uniforms. The boys in white shirts and ties, the girls in pleated skirts and blouses.
At first the uniforms all looked the same to me, but after spending a few months in Tokushima, I started to recognize the subtle differences among the clothes kids wore to school. Each school had its own set of uniforms, which gave clues about the nature of the school – and in Japan, high schools definitely have a hierarchy.
The kids at the prestigious private high school in town dressed meticulously – the crisp white shirts always tucked in, while even the bags, the shoes, and the socks matched. But the students attending some of the less competitive schools could get away with wearing baggier pants, shorter skirts, and trendier shoes and socks.
Uniforms tell a lot about the schools they represent!
