Soft Cream Revolution
最初の数週間の仕事で、何人かの私の生徒たちが町にある彼らの大好きなソフトクリームを教えてくれたの。 そしていつも私は彼らの英語をただしたわ、「soft creamよりもsoft serve ice cream」って言うのよって。
後で気づいたのだけれど、日本の多くの場所では実際にメニューに英語で「soft cream 」って書いてあったの。 そういうわけでたぶん生徒たちじゃあなくって、私だけが間違ってたのかも。
私は日本でソフトクリームがこれほど人気があるってことが信じられなかったわ。 それに私はそのちょっと変わった味付けにとまどったわ。
緑茶 – ちょっと変わってるけどそれほどびっくりじゃあないかも。
さくらんぼ – はじめはちょっととまどったけれど、でも今では私が京都を訪れる時の大好きなもののひとつ。
ごま – これこれ、限界に挑戦って感じ。 この味は本当にダメ。 実際にすごく不味いの。
しょうゆ – ごめんなさい、これはちょっとやりすぎ。 もう考えただけでも嫌になりそう。
うどん – キャ～！ 香川県でだけだけど。
それらの味付けのいくつかはソフトクリームとは合わないかも。
During the first few weeks at work, some of my students talked to me about their favorite soft cream places around town. And every time, I would correct their English, telling them to say “soft serve ice cream” instead of “soft cream.”
That was before I knew that most places in Japan actually wrote the words “soft cream” in English on their menu boards. So I guess I was the one making a mistake, not my students.
And I could never get over how popular soft cream was in Japan. But I was baffled by all the unusual flavors I found.
Green tea – a little exotic, but not a total surprise.
Cherry blossom – I was a little hesitant about it at first, but now it’s one of my favorite things about visiting Kyoto.
Sesame – OK, that’s pushing the limits. This flavor is really not my favorite. In fact, it’s gross.
Soy sauce – Sorry, that’s crossing the line. It makes me sick just to think about it.
Udon – ugh! Only in Kagawa Prefecture. There are some flavors that just don’t go with soft cream.
