Hello, VIVASH!
私の同僚の一人がある日とても落ち込んでいたの。 彼女はそれについて話したがらなかったわ。 どうやったら私たちが彼女を元気付けれるかしら？
オフィスにいた別のアメリカ人があるアイデアを思いついたの。
そうだ！ 彼は新しいカフェが新町にできたことを私たちに話したわ。 そこまで歩いていって、ホットチョコレートでも飲もうよ。
私たちはそれをとっても素敵なアイデアだと思ったわ。
それは私が初めてビバッシュを知った時だったの。 そしてすぐに私の大好きなカフェになったわ。
ビバッシュは私が今までに見たどのカフェとも違ってたわ。 お店の前にある大きな窓、ぴかぴかの木の床、鉄の家具 – それはとってもモダンでスタイリッシュだったわ。 でも他の私が訪ねたどんなモダンなカフェとも違ってたの。 ビバッシュはとっても心地良くて誘惑的だったわ。 スタッフもフレンドリーだったし、音楽も気軽で楽しかったわ。
そしてコーヒーも素晴らしいの。 私はオーナーが彼の完璧な技術をお店を開く前にイタリアで勉強したって聞いたわ。
私はそこが大好き。 私はまた戻ってくるわ！
One of my Japanese co-workers had been looking kind of depressed all day. She didn’t want to talk about it, though. How could we cheer her up?
Another American in the office had an idea.
Hey! A new café just opened over in Shinmachi, he told us. Let’s take a walk over there and get some hot chocolate.
We thought that sounded like a perfect idea.
And that would be my first introduction to VIVASH.
It immediately became my favorite café.
VIVASH was so unlike any other café I had ever seen. Big picture windows at the front of the shop, sleek blonde wood floors, steel furniture – it was very modern and stylish. But unlike so many other modern cafes I had visited, VIVASH was comfortable and inviting. The staff was so friendly, the music light and fun.
And the coffee was amazing. I heard the owner had studied in Italy, perfecting his technique before opening his own place.
I loved it. I knew I would be back!

Macou’s Run
大学時代に、私はランチにべーグルを毎日食べてたの。 チョコレートチップ、セサミ、プレーン – 全部大好きだったわ！！ でも私が日本へ来たとき、本当のべーグルを見つけるのはとても難しかったの。
私がマコーズを見つけるまでは・・・。
私の友達の何人かはどれだけ私がべーグルを恋しがってたかを知っていたの。 だから彼らは高松への日帰り旅行を企画してくれたの。 彼らは新しいべーグルショップが出来たことを知って、一緒に試してみましょうよって考えたの。
正直にいうと、私はちょっと疑ってたわ。 いくつかの徳島にあるベーカリーはべーグルと呼ぶパンを焼いていたわ、でもそれらは本当のべーグルではなかったの。 だから私はマコーズのべーグルも私をがっかりさせるんじゃあないかと心配してたわ。
でもマコーズはがっかりさせなかったわ。 それどころかそこのべーグルは私の故郷にあるお気に入りのべーグルのいくつかよりもおいしかったわ。 それに種類も素晴らしかったわ！ 私はダブルチョコレート、シナモン・レーズン、パンプキン、それに他にも選べたの。 コーヒーだって素敵だったわ。
はまったわ。
毎月、私は会社の会議に出席するために高松へ行かなきゃならなかったの。 だから私の同僚と私はいつも少し早めの汽車に乗ってマコーズヘ行ったの。 そこはちょっと離れていたわ、でも私はテリヤキ・チキン・セサミ・べーグルサンドウィッチとキャラメル・ラテを逃したくなかったの。
それは日本での私の大好きな食べ物のひとつだったわ。
During college, I ate a bagel everyday for lunch. Chocolate chip, sesame, plain – I loved them all! But when I came to Japan, it was impossible to find a real bagel.
Until I found Macou’s…
Some of my friends knew how much I missed bagels, so they planned a day trip to Takamatsu. They had heard about a new bagel shop there and thought we should try it together.
Honestly, I was a little skeptical. Some of the bakeries in Tokushima had bread they called bagels, but these “bagels” weren’t the real thing. I was afraid the bagels at Macou’s would disappoint me too…
But Macou’s did not disappoint! In fact the bagels there tasted better than some of my favorite bagels back home. And the variety was amazing! I could choose from double chocolate chip, cinnamon raisin, pumpkin, and more. The coffee drinks were great as well.
I was hooked.
Every month, I had to attend company meetings in Takamatsu, so my co-workers and I would always take an early train and run over to Macou’s. It was out of our way, but I didn’t want to miss my teriyaki chicken sesame bagel sandwich and caramel latte.
It was one of my favorite meals in Japan.

Starbucks Search
日本へ来る前には、私はアメリカでスターバックスへ行ったことを思い出せないの。 もちろん行ったことはあると思うわ。 でもそれは別に私にとってそれほど特別なことではなかったの。
日本へ来てからはそれは変わったわ。 私はいっつもカフェへ行くようになったの。 そしてスターバックスは私の大好きな場所になったの。
でも一つだけ問題があったわ – そのとき四国にはスターバックスがなかったの。 だから週末に神戸や大阪を訪れたときに最初に行く場所は？ もちろんスターバックス！ 私は三宮となんばのバスターミナル付近にあるすべてのスターバックスの位置を調べたわ。 だからいつも私はキャラメル・マキアートとアーモンド・ロールをどこで手に入れれるか知ってたの。

Before coming to Japan, I can’t remember ever having gone to Starbucks in the US.
I’m sure I must have gone. It just wasn’t such a big deal to me.
But things changed when I came to Japan. I started visiting cafes all the time and I decided that Starbucks was one of my favorites.
But there was only one problem – there were no Starbucks in Shikoku at the time.
So every time I visited Kobe or Osaka on the weekends, where was my first stop? At Starbucks, of course! I searched the area around the bus terminals in Sannomiya and Namba to discover all the Starbucks locations. So then I would always know where to go to get my caramel macchiato and almond roll.
What a treat!
